"Tindari, mite I know thee among wide hanging hills on the waters of the sweet islands of god, today thou assailest me and stoopest in my heart..." S. Quasimodo.
Myth, art, culture, fairytale landscapes: this is Tindari, a pleasant locality in the Gulf of Patti located within the municipality of the same name in the province of Messina.
Founded in 396 B.C. by Syracusan mercenaries in the war against Carthage at the behest of Dionysius of Syracuse, the ancient city of Tindari owes its name to Tindaro king of Sparta.
The Sanctuary of the Black Madonna is the main attraction of Tindari. It is located at the eastern end of the promontory, overlooking the sea, at the ancient acropolis, where a small church was built on the remains of the abandoned city.
At the foot of the promontory where the Tindari Sanctuary stands are the Laghetti di Marinello, an arm of sea of exceptional beauty. It is a vast area of sand with small lakes of brackish water that are constantly changing due to the tides.
